Overtime is counted per workweek (7-day blocks from your start date), as the FLSA requires. Workweek 2 in a biweekly sheet has its own 40-hour threshold. Leave daily OT/DT blank for the standard federal rule; check California for the §510 daily rules.

From punch clock to paycheck

A time clock records raw punches; payroll needs worked hours. This calculator does the conversion chain in one place: subtract unpaid breaks, handle overnight shifts, apply rounding if your employer rounds (see the options), convert to decimal hours, and split regular vs overtime hours per workweek.

Rounding, done honestly

Under the 7-minute rule, punches round to the nearest quarter hour: minutes :00–:07 round down, :08–:22 to :15, :23–:37 to :30, :38–:52 to :45, :53+ to the next hour. Rounding must not systematically favor the employer — see our time card rounding guide for how the rules work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I total my time clock punches?
Enter each day's clock-in and clock-out times exactly as they appear on your punch record; unpaid breaks go in the break columns. The daily total appears immediately, and the week totals itself — including decimal hours for payroll.
What if I forgot to punch out?
Enter your best estimate of the actual end time and flag it for your manager — payroll must pay hours actually worked even when a punch is missing.
Does punch rounding change my pay?
It can. If your employer rounds, the 7-minute rule (nearest 15 minutes) is the compliant method. You can simulate it under Calculator options → Rounding.
Can I track overtime from punches?
Yes — set the weekly threshold (40 by default) and any daily rules. Overtime is counted per workweek, the way the FLSA requires.
