The one rule: minutes ÷ 60
Every minute is 1/60 of an hour. 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 = 0.50, 45 = 0.75. So 8:45 is 8.75 decimal hours, and 22 minutes is 0.37 (rounded from 0.3666). Payroll systems round to two decimals; the converter shows exactly what they'll multiply by your rate.
Where the classic mistakes happen
- Writing 7.45 for 7 h 45 m — correct is 7.75
- Adding h:mm as if it were decimal (8:30 + 8:30 = 17:00, not 16.60)
- Rounding twice — round once, at the end, to two decimals
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours: 8 h 30 m = 8 + 30/60 = 8.50. The converter above does it instantly, both directions.
Is 7 hours 45 minutes 7.45 or 7.75?
7.75. Minutes are sixtieths, not hundredths: 45/60 = 0.75. Writing 7.45 on a timesheet underpays by 18 minutes per day.
Why do payroll systems want decimal hours?
Multiplication. Rate × decimal hours is one step: 7.75 × $22 = $170.50. h:mm has to be converted anyway, so payroll does it up front — this page matches what they use.
